One of the
most expensive roads to maintain in the city of is the 27th street
corridor. Historically 27th street functioned as the connection
between Highway 6 and Highway 97. In spite of the construction of the now
decades old overpass in the north end of Vernon that directs north south traffic to 32th
st. 27th st. continues to carry a heavy traffic
load from residential areas in the south and east of greater Vernon and points
east. This load has increased with the concentration of big retail stores in
the Anderson subdivision and the north of Vernon and the residential development
on slopes of Middleton Mountain. Local drivers rightly choose this route to the
north of Vernon avoiding the congestion on 32th st.
I believe
that funding options for this route's maintenance and enhancement should be
pursued at the local and provincial level of government since 27 th Street has
retained and in some ways increased its role as a connector between Highway 6
and Highway 97. Taxing heavy trucks is not the answer.
The answer to this thoroughfare maintenance lies in the acknowledgement of shared responsibility with the various jurisdictions that do benefit from this busy corridor.
